The cities of Santiago and Concepcion were jolted by an 8.5 earthquake today in the early hours of the morning just an hour or two before dawn. The 8.5 earthquake struck at the time of three thirty-four in the a.m. and left the people traumatized as they could be seen coming out to the streets and in the open in a complete state of shock.
One of the witnesses of the 8.5 earthquake likened the quake to being like the coming of the end of the world as the earth shook not once but three times. The after shocks that followed in the form of tremors were measured at six point two and five point six on the scale and created a mass panic. The city of Santiago was in darkness as an electrical blackout ensued shortly after the quake which brought damage to the electric lines and the telephone lines. Communication was made extremely hard for those trying to get in touch with their families and friends in neighboring cities, towns and villages.
The total confirmed deaths of the 8.5 earthquake is so far coming to six people though the government is of the view that the total deaths may increase as more areas are explored and investigated. The quake is believed to have set off a tsunami as well which has led the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue warnings to the neighboring regions of the epicenter which include Antarctica as well. While on the other side of the ocean the Philippines’ Government has asked the coastal areas to stay alert and possibly evacuate their offices or homes that lie close to the coastline.
