Today in the hours of the morning before dawn Chile was struck by an 8.8 earthquake that shook the ground for many miles around the epicenter. The city of Santiago, the capital of Chile saw its residents wake up to the early morning disaster while being at a distance of two hundred miles from the epicenter of the 8.8 earthquake. The earthquake’s epicenter was a bit over fifty miles from the city of Concepcion which is considered to be amongst the largest cities of Chile.
The 8.8 earthquake left six people confirmed as dead while there is doubt about the total death toll remaining the same as more bodies might be uncovered when the debris of the fallen buildings is cleared. The entire region was left in shock as it was one of the largest earthquakes to have hit the are in over twenty years. The last time an earthquake as massive as this had hit the region was in the annum of 1960 when the city of Valdivia was flattened by an earthquake with a magnitude of nine point six on the Richter scale. That very earthquake had left as many as sixteen hundred and fifty-five people dead.
Following the 8.8 earthquake there were after shocks as well, two to be exact, with the first one measuring a 6.2 and the second one registering at 5.6 on the scale. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center was also active in issuing warnings to the entire list of countries that might be seeing a potential tsunami headed in their direction.
