Adam Trenk won the Cave Creek’s final Town Council seat by drawing a king of Hearts from the deck. A month after the top candidates for the Cave Creek Town Council seat “Thomas McGuire and Adam Trenk” finished tied with 660 votes each; the race settled between the two candidates by a card game.
According to the Arizona State law if an election tied between two competitors “a lot” must settle it, the law also refers to a game of chance.
Current city council member “Thomas McGuire” and challenger “Adam Trenk” had the choice to toss a coin, roll dice or draw straws. Instead, they choose to play a card game to settle the tie. Whoever pulls out the higher card will win. Both candidates McGuire and Trenk get together around a judge inside “Cave Creek” council meeting room late on Monday afternoon to draw from a deck of cards and decide who will become the next council member. Thomas McGuire went first and drew a six of hearts; next, comes the turn of Adam Trenk and when he drew he got the King of hearts from the deck, which made him the winner.
Adam Trenk said that he is happy with the results; he said that in a model world, we would have had another run-off, but this is what the state Legislature authorized. On the other hand, McGuire said that he is looking forward for a brighter and better future for the community.
This was not the first time that an election was decided in this fashion, back in 1990’s a state House of Representative seat was decided in the same manner.
