Kavya Shivashankar, the 13-year-old girl from Olathe, Kansas nailed it and won the 2009 Country Spelling Bee Championship by spelling “L-A-O-D-I-C-E-A-N” correctly on Thursday 28th May. Kavya Shivashankar who wrote every word on her palm has finished first in the spelling bee contest. Whereas Tim Ruiter was the runner-ups and Aishwarya Pastapur secured third place.
Tim Ruiter spelled “maecenas” incorrect and was eliminated, he has secured the second position and Aishwarya Pastapur was eliminated for spelling “menhir” wrongly.
Tim Ruiter a 12-year-old from Centreville, Va. was given the word “maecenas” to spell but was unable to do so. The word Ruiter was given to spell was “maecenas” which means an educational sponsor. The important thing about Ruiter which differentiates him from others was that he was the only non-teenager in the computation. On the other hand Aishwarya Pastapur a 13-year-old of Springfield, Illinois. Aishwarya Pastapur after spelling a word correctly loved to force her arms and cry out “Yes” secured the third position in the computation after misspelling the word “menhir”.
The promising Kavya Shivashankar from Olathe, Kansas., survived 11 finalists to win the 82nd “National Spelling Bee Championship”. She has been awarded with $40,000 and other prizes including a giant champion’s trophy.
