Akeelah and the Bee is one of few movies that have the capacity to make you cry and smile at the same time. If you are depressed and have to be up to the mark take Akeelah and the Bee. At least the prescription worked for me. Written and directed by Doug Atchison “Akeelah and Bee” is the story of an 11 year older with some natural talent at spellings.
As her talent is discovered, she is encouraged to prepare for the spelling bees at state and then national levels. She wants to be coached by English Language Professor Larabee, who refuses at first but then agrees. Akeelah is determined and prepares on her own and barely makes a position for herself for the Spelling Bee at district level. She makes friends with Javier who is a Mexican American and another talent at spellings. However her real challenge is Daniel Chiu. As she wins the competition Daniel’s father is overheard reprimanding his son that he must be careful as he barely made it against and 11 years old black girl. Afterwards Daniel asks Akeelah the spellings of Xanthosis. As she starts the word with a “z”, he stops her and advises her to get better coaching.
It’s the time for final competition and there are three favorites for the winning position, Akeelah, Daniel and Javier. Javier is eliminated earlier and takes the fifth position. The competition is between Akeelah and Daniel. The word is………..Xanthosis and Akeelah spells it with a Z again. She wants Daniel to win as he is under great pressure from his father to take the position. But Daniel doesn’t want a win that is given to him as alms and spells the Xanthosis wrong himself.
The competition ends with both the contestants being declared as winners.
