Men, come and go, their work exist forever, Army Archerd, a New York born columnist, brought new vitality to entertainment reporting and writing, passed away yesterday on 8, sep, in Los Angeles at the age of 87. Army Archerd was one of the most renowned, very professional minded and a creative reporter.
Archerd began his career on the entertainment beat in 1945 and after 8 years, he launched his column “Just for Variety” at Daily Variety, the personal and professional lives of Hollywood stars and tycoons could never be concealed by his sharp professional eyes. He went through with his columns with Varity, for at least 52 years and received immense praise and admiration for his earth-shattering stories, the most striking of these was the exposure of the fact that actor Rock Hudson was suffering from AIDS. He was so blindly trusted and well-respected because of his authentic coverage.
Army Archerd collapsed on Monday afternoon at his home in Westwood, L.A.; he died after battling against lungs cancer, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Selma her wife told that he was diagnosed with an exceptional form of mesothelioma five years ago; according to doctors it all started it after he was exposure to shipyard asbestos, while serving in the Navy during World War II. She said he had suffered a lot over the last two years of his life, particularly in the last two weeks.
Army Archerd left the scene back in 2005; he got retirement to live out the end days of his life with his actress wife, Selma and now passed away by leaving her poignant and alone. Aspiring media correspondents of all ilks are in an awe for him.
