Asperger’s Syndrome is autism like disorder. Children with Asperger’s Syndrome have difficulty adapting to their environment and show physically odd movements and cognitive short comings. Although Asperger’s disorder, most probably has its genetic roots, the way scientists see it is radically changing. It is thought more of a unique way of processing the external stimuli than a disease. Looking at the behaviors that individuals with Asperger’s disorder exhibit, it is becoming clear that their genes have not evolved at par with the modern human beings and that there is no disease at work. For example a person with Asperger’s would get into a talk with another person. The observer cannot guess anything wrong with the person except some clumsy physical movements but there is subtle difference; a person with Asperger’s fails to notice the cues which the other person gives such as he is bored or he is in hurry or he is uneasy. This failure results in the person with Asperger’s talking on and on without taking other’s feelings into account.
As Magnetic Resonance Imaging and other imaging techniques have almost failed to notice the difference in the brain of a person with Asperger’s disorder and a normal person’s brain, it is thought that subtle changes are made in the way the brain develops and disorder is not confined to a particular area in the brain.
The claims that people with the disorder show violent behavior, is absolutely unfounded. There are limited treatment options; however the pace at which the genetic engineering is progressing, a breakthrough is not far out of sight. The persons with the syndrome are usually treated with a Behavior Modification regimen and a learning program to get them equipped with social skills.
