Thieves stole the iconic sign from the Auschwitz death camp in Poland.
The iconic sign, which carried the infamous Nazi slogan ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’, has been stolen from the Auschwitz death camp in Poland.
According to the details, thieves have stolen the iron sign which spanned over the gate of Auschwitz death camp. The incident happened around between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. on Friday, says the local Polish police. The museum security guard alerted the police around 5 a.m. local time. A Police spokesperson said that it appears the thieves unscrewed the iron sign from one side of the gate and tore off from the other side. The police also says that at least two men were involved in the theft to carry the iron sign which weighs 40 kg. The 16 ft. long sign bears the popular saying of Nazi Germany ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ meaning ‘Work Shall Set You Free’.
Police has started an intensive investigation in the area around the Auschwitz death camp. Police is using dog teams as well. Investigators are questioning local guards and security officials of the museum. An Auschwitz museum insider told that the thieves must have information about the museum security systems as the museum premises are closed at night and security guards patrol in the area. The police is watching closed circuit camera videos to get a clue. Police says that the intentions of the individuals involved in the theft are not understandable as the iconic sign is difficult to sell.
The Auschwitz museum officials have put up a replica of the iconic sign to replace the stolen one. Officials have offered a reward of 5,000 zloty (US $ 1,700) for providing information which could lead to capture the thieves.
