A Bay Bridge Crack made the authorities think for an unexpected upgrade. Over 73-year-old bay bridge has been crossed by more or less 260,000 cars and trucks every day and now it is time for some upgrades, this bridge has been closed since Thursday night for a seismic upgrade project, could remain closed until further notice for there has been found a hefty crack in a support strut that authorities say would have “blocked the bridge on its own.”
Authorities found this Oakland Bay Bridge Crack during a usual inspection; workers found some problem with the eastern end of Bay Bridge, San Francisco in which a steel connection that helps to hold-up the bridge is discovered to be cracked. Ken Brown, senior bridge engineer told that this link is a part of a network of eight parallel pieces of thick steel wire. This was at least two inches thick and was cracked from center throughout. This is a considerable crack was large enough that it can be seen by the naked eye, from the ground, so the bridge has not been open according to the announced time.
Now, a team of professionals is working to fix that fractured steel link, called an eye bar, problem was discovered on Saturday afternoon, when bridge was closed for some construction project and this crack would have forced officials to remain the bridge shut down for some more time.
Bart Ney, Caltrans’ Bay Bridge spokesman said that we are trying to reopen it as soon as possible but safety and reliability of the bridge is our major concern so bridge will not be opened till the new eastern-side span is proved secure.
