Bert Stiles is one of those war heroes who scarified their life in the line of duty in World War II. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the world war. But the most significant and distinctive aspect of this soldier is that he is one of those rare war heroes who left his literary work for generations to come. He was the author of “Serenade to the Big Bird”.
The book was published after his death and is considered as the marvelous piece of art originating from World War II. Although Bert Stiles was a writer yet his work brings optimism in the reader. He was a straight forward writer and portrayed the picture without any personal prejudice. Today’s readers are lucky that Bert’s written work is available to them that provides very closer insight in to the past and war time experiences which can not be easily imagined and admired. As an Army Air Force pilot, he went for almost thirty air missions. As a pilot, he always desired to fly P-51 Mustang aircraft. In September 1944 when he was on a mission he followed an enemy aircraft but his plane crashed. He died on the spot. It was his 16th mission and died at the age of 24 only.
He had completed his book, Serenade to the Big Bird, before he died in the line of duty. He had intention to get the book published. The book provides a true picture of his life’s events blended with intensity of emotions. He was very passionate about writing but on the contrary he also had passion of flying. His sensitivity towards his country and his craze for flying makes his picture a little bit confusing in the sense what if he would have not been born in era of World War II.
