Perhaps no historic place has captured the hearts and minds of nation more than the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore Estate was dreamt by millionaire George Washington Vanderbilt and there is a dream like quality to the whole estate. Since the construction it has captured the fascination of everyone. Vanderbilt apart from being a millionaire was a very reserved person and as he set upon building the structure he did not only want to reflect the wealth he had but also wanted to spend it in a way that would attract the imagination of the generations to come. Vanderbilt visited the place where Biltmore Estate now stands in 1888. The climate and scenery so fascinated him that in the same year he hired an attorney to buy the land, and initially some 2000 acres were bought. However that was just a start and at the time when he died he owned 125,000 acres of nearby land! Architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Richard Morris Hunt were given the task to come up with the design but neither could have imagined the majesty of the outcome. Biltmore house was to become one of the finest pieces of architecture and natural landscaping.
Today many tour operators can arrange your visit to the estate at competitive costs. The place is usually crowded with the tourists so plan your visit to absorb the natural beauty and the beauty of construction on not so busy days. Weekends are obviously the most crowded days, so take a day or two off from your work to visit Biltmore Estate.
