October is the Breast Cancer Awareness month and hundreds of activities are going on around the world to spread awareness about the disease.
The American Cancer Society is one of those active organizations which conduct seminars, walks, lectures, and free check-ups for women round-the-year. Today the society is sponsoring a breast cancer awareness walk on the Long Island. The walk will start from Jones Beach State Park, Long Island, New York. The participants can register on the spot. The walk will start between 8 and 11 a.m. Rain or shine. The organizers have requested the guest to wear hats, gloves, and layers of clothes as the weather forecasts are predicting a 40-degree temperature with 20 mph wind. The registration will be done at Field 5 and will start at 8 a.m. and will continue till 11 a.m. Those who want to avoid crowd should come to the Long Beach State Park at 10a.m. for the registration. The walkers can start the walk anytime between 8 and 11. The walking distance is 5 miles. A similar walk was organized which was attended by 50,000 participants. Anne Thorson, the organizer of the 5-miles walk, says, ‘When you go up to that boardwalk and you see the little dots of pink, you know that you’re making a difference.’
The American Breast Cancer Society sponsors this non-competitive walk every year. The walk, which is titled ‘Making Strides against Breast Cancer, is organized in nearly 130 cities. The walk distance ranges form 3.1 miles to 5 miles depending upon the landform of the respective city. Funds raised from these walks are used to promote the society’s activities to spread knowledge about breast cancer among women.
