As Vincent Astor died his wife Brooke Astor took it to herself to take care of the funds he left to run so many charities and to other noble causes. Vincent was fortunate to have found such a honest trustee to his estate, however Brooke was not fortunate enough. He appointed her son to take care of the philanthropy work. Anthony Marshall embezzled the funds and benefited himself by many fraudulent schemes.
The judge who heard the case against Anthony Marshall sounded shocked at the frauds perpetuated by Marshall with the help of his attorney.
The crimes included Marshall allowing himself to receive an increase of $1 Million in payroll to manage the funds.
The court also sentenced the attorney, who helped Marshall in the crimes. They would start serving the sentence from 19th of January in case they do not appeal against the sentence
Marshall’s attorney along with Marshall made brook Astor to amend her will, when she was rendered unable to decide anything as the result of progressing Alzheimer’s disease. The duo also put Brooke Astor’s forged signature on a fake will.
Progressing Alzheimer’s disease and accompanying symptoms had made Brooke Astor incompetent to decide for herself.
As the case proceeded and evidence was brought forward by the prosecutors Marshall was seen wiping tears from his eyes. His attorney said how a man at an advanced age such as Marshall’s could do this to his mother’s will. However prosecution seems to have a water tight case against him. He would serve minimum of 1 year behind the bars.
