Buju Banton, Jamaican Reggae star, is facing charges of drug possession in Florida. Buju Banton (Mark Anthony Myrie) is under U.S Federal Custody since Thursday.
Drug Enforcement Administration has commented that Banton’s arrest is for the charges of involving in a conspiracy of possessing five kilograms cocaine with intention to distribute. The arrest has its lead form a DEA investigation in Tampa. Buju Banton will be shifted to Tampa where the U.S attorney placed charges against Buju Banton. If convicted then Banton may receive a federal mandatory sentencing of minimum 20 years behind the bars.
Buju Banton got a quittance in a gay-bashing attack against him in Kingston Jamaica in 2005. He was alleged as one of the men who entered in a Carlisle Avenue house forcefully and attacked the men inside the house by accusing them of involved in gay activities.
Banton’s “Pasta Got Soul” album has been nominated for the Grammy Award. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance opposed this honor taking the stance that Banton’s songs motivate people to act against us. Buju Banton is one of those eight artists who are remained under constant criticism from gay and lesbian people in Jamaica, Europe and America. Stop Murder Music, J-Flag and many other human rights organizations has protested against Buju Banton. More than five million Pound Sterling losses have been reported since the launch of campaign as a result of cancellation of many concerts.
The arrest will remain sad news for all Buju Banton fans. The arrest will certainly be welcomed by all those gay and lesbian organizations.
