This year, as the Forbes magazine released its world’s richest men list, the citizens of Mexico found something to be proud of as their wealthiest man Carlos Slim Helu made it to the number one position on the list. Carlos Slim Helu who owns assets worth a staggering amount of fifty-three and a half billion dollars is seventy years of age now and says that he holds no plans to retire. Carlos had his mind on money ever since he was an eleven year old when he invested in bonds and then in the years that followed invested more money in the largest bank of Mexico.
Carlos Slim Helu first came into money when his father cashed in on the lucrative opportunities provided by the Mexican revolution that took place between the years of 1910 and 1917 during which he traded properties which would later on give the family big money. At the age of twenty-six, after completing his civil engineering degree and working fourteen hour days to build his own stock broking company, Carlos was already sitting on some forty million dollars.
The major breakthrough for Carlos came in the early eighties depression that led many foreign and local investors to bail out giving Carlos the chance to buy assets for cheaper rates. Carlos doesn’t exhibit the uppity attitude that so many billionaires around the world hold as he lives in a simple house of just six bedrooms. His house is decorated with paintings that can only be bought by a billionaire and pieces of art that express his love for beauty. He says that he will continue his charity towards the citizens of Mexico by providing them decent healthcare and a shopping mall. Carlos jumped in worth by eighteen and a half billion dollars from his standing last year putting Bill Gates in the runner up position and Warren Buffet in third.
