Champlain Bridge Demolition was a controlled demolition that took just seconds. An old Bridge known as “Lake Champlain Bridge” connecting an upstate N.Y town to Vermont has been brought down in a controlled explosion this Monday morning.
A bittersweet sight for the locals living alongside Lake Champlain, when in a controlled explosion on 28th December the old Champlain Bridge that spanned the lake was demolished.
The demolition of 80-year-old Champlain Bridge that was the first of its kind used for highway traffic along the border of upstate New York to Vermont and its design was duplicated numerous times on other bridges was amazing.
A small number of onlookers were present at the time of demolition in which 2,184 ft long Champlain Bridge was demolished and dropped into the cold water and ice at the south end of Lake Champlain.
The area was closed and demolition was not visible for public viewing, public was kept almost 2 miles away from the main destruction area for safety. A sharp sound followed by a billowing smoke, while the mix of concrete and steel fell into the cold river down below.
The bridge was closed in October after engineers held it unsafe for use because of sever erosion in the concrete piers of the bridge.
Local people have been forced to take a longer route to reach their schools and jobs. Local business owners have asserted that without the bridge the border economy of upstate New York and Vermont will collapse.
Construction for a new bridge will commence this spring, but it will take over 18 months to complete the construction of this new bridge.
