Ali Hassan Abdul Majeed al Tikritieh better known by his nick Chemical Ali was executed for crimes against humanity on January 25, 2010. Saddam Hussain’s first cousin Chemical Ali was in charge of defense and interior ministries. As a chief of Iraqi Intelligence Service he used many repressive measures against the Kurds. The Kurds had assigned him the nick chemical Ali because he had attacked them with chemical weapons. Chemical Ali hanged today marks the end of Saddam’s right hand.
Chemical Ali was facing conviction for crimes against Kurds and Shiites. Four death sentences were announced for his crimes. The latest death sentence was announced on January 17, 2010.
Chemical Ali was arrested in 2003. His trial was initiated in 2006. Chemical Ali hanged was proved guilty of crimes against humanity like extermination, abduction of political opponents, brutal killings and genocide of Shiites. He was sentenced to death in June 2007 but the execution was delayed because of political differences among the Iraqi rulers.
Chemical Ali received the 2nd death sentence for the genocide of Shiites on 2nd December 2008. A third death sentence was served on him on 2nd March 2009 for the murder of Ayotallah Mohammed Al Sadr. He received the fourth and final death sentence for the genocide of Kurds on January 17, 2010.
Chemical Ali was born in Tikrit on November 30, 1941. He was serving as a driver in Iraqi army till 1968. He rose to power after Saddam gained authority and posted his clan members on key positions. The news Chemical Ali hanged will relieve thousands of Iraqis who had lost their dear ones during the Saddam’s rule.
