Cho Oyu, The turquoise Goddess, is the world’s sixth highest peak. The peak offers unique opportunities for amateur mountaineers as it offers the easiest 8000 m climb. Moreover if the weather is chosen carefully the dangers are further reduced. The peak is a part of Himalayas and is situated in the vicinity of Mount Everest. Cho Oyu can be climbed from Nepalese side and also from the Tibetan side. As much as it is easier to climb the summit, it is difficult to get the permission from Nepalese or Chinese Governments. The best season to climb the summit is either before monsoons or after the monsoons has passed.
The peak was first climbed by an expedition in 1954. There is a glacier nearby which is the main trade route for Sherpa’s and Tibetan people. However the trade through the glacier has dwindled since the Chinese army opened the fire on the people crossing the route.
If you want to climb the mountain from Tibetan sight you would have to take the flight from Kathmandu to Tibet and rest assured, every second on the air craft is worthwhile if the skies are clear. You can watch Mount Everest and other popular peaks and their stunning beauty.
The other way is to take a jeep from Kathmandu and reach the base camp by road. Do not forget to check the weather in detail before attempting the summit.
Relative ease of the climbing should not be taken as a permit to forgo precautionary measures.
