Chris Matthews the TV anchor has commented that he forgot for an hour that Obama was black during the state of union address. His crude words” forgot he was black” were taken adversely by many Americans and he had to clarify that he meant to say that Obama should be applauded for minimizing the racial differences. Obama’s commendable efforts in this regard made Chris Matthews forgot he was black.
Chris Matthews anchors “Hardball with Chris Matthews” a talk show on MSNBC TV. He also hosts “The Chris Matthews show” on weekends.
Matthews is considered to be a staunch supporter of Democrats. So it is astonishing that he passed such remarks.
Chris Matthews has a bad repute of making adverse remarks against black people. He has attributed the remarks to a contrast that overwhelmed him. Looking at the House of Representatives an obvious majority of white people being addressed by the first ever black president made Chris Matthews forgot he was black but just “for an hour”.
The words “for an hour” were also taken badly. Some quarters have commented that it implies that Matthews has a grudge against the blacks and for the rest of the time he remembers that he is black or may be regrets that.
It is a pity that the world’s largest democracy has such factions that think the racial divisions still prevailed. And they need a wizard like President Obama who can make people like Chris Matthews forgot he was black.
