Apart from its historic importance Churchill Downs is the first horse race track to host Rolling Stone’s concert.
Since the beginning, the track has hosted thorough bred races and is known for its annual Kentucky Derby. The track occupies 5th slot in the Horseplayers Association ranking. Since June this year the track is featuring night races also.
The track traces back its history, when Colonel Clark Jr. was given the land by his uncle for horse races in 1870s. The track gained popularity as the two tracks in the area had been shut down. Colonel Clark had his own likes and dislikes in the horse racing and wanted to run the track according to his own tastes. However soon he found himself in financial difficulties and the track was bought by William Applegate. It was Applegate who made the lasting changes in the track and laid the foundation of the traditions that continue to this day like the length of the track, that was set at about 2Kms and the way the winning horses are adorned.
As the track was handed over to the Louisville mayor, he wanted to establish the track as the centre of social activity not gambling and hence the track started hosting different social gatherings also.
In 1907 a Jockey named James Lee won all six race card and made record that remain unbroken to this date. As the modern betting machines were brought in at the start of previous century, track became profitable again.
At the start of Millennium the renovations at the track started. Historic monuments at the site were refurbished and many other modern features were added.
