Member of the Animalia kingdom and deriving its roots in the M. Hamiltoni species the Colossal Squid is one big squid making the giant squid look like child in front of it. Although a full sized Colossal Squid hasn’t been observed as yet by scientists its full body length can reach a staggering length of fourteen meters which equates to forty-six feet which is roughly the height of a four story building. The Colossal Squid was discovered eighty-five years ago in the annum of 1925 by the Zoologist Guy C. Robson who specialized in the study of Mollusca.
The Colossal Squid is unique in its own way as it exhibits hooks attached to its tentacles and these hooks come in two forms, those which swivel and then those which are fixed and have three points on them. The difference can be compared to the giant squid which only has little teeth and sucking cavities built in to its tentacles. The Colossal Squid may have shorter tentacles than the giant squid but its mantle is much larger and the main body of the squid is wider which makes the Colossal Squid the heavier of the two.
The Colossal Squid is known to keep its niche in the Southern Ocean usually covering the entire expanse of the enormous body of water. It can be found, if one goes to look for it, north of Antarctica all the way to the southern most land mass of South America and in the waters that lie between South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope and the borders of New Zealand.
