Comminuted Fracture is a bone fracture with more then one fragment breaks in the bone. The bone usually breaks from a place in multiple pieces, the pieces can be dislodge or balanced within the defected tissues.
It is considered as severe orthopedic injury as comminuted fracture may leads to different complicated diseases, if not treated properly it can cause infection and it can even result into the loss of limb, in the worst scenario it can even take to the death.
Comminuted fractures can be caused by the forceful trauma like bullet or by the car accident. Bone requires quite a power and force to be fragmented. In most of the cases of Comminuted fractures, the bone can find the a little way out of skin, a piece of bone can be exposed out of the skin, which may cause infection and contamination. For this reason Comminuted fracture is also regarded as open fracture.
Comminuted fracture mostly affects the young people as it is caused by the vehicular trauma.
There are no significant laboratory tests to diagnose the comminuted fracture, it can only be traced by the X. rays. The noticeable swelling after the accident can also signals to this particular fracture. The doctors usually ask about the other serious health problems before the trauma, as after the trauma, the other vital systems needs to be normalized first.
The treatment surgery can prolong as it may requires the complete bone to be exposed, fixed and then placed again. It requires the general anesthesia. Pins may also be required to install for external fixture.
The preventive measures must also be required as infection can be turned into dangerous.
