Crispy Critters breakfast cereal was re-issued by Post Cereals in 1987 after having been tested ineffectively almost 10 years. This second effort to make it popular was also failed and it was terminated soon after that. The shapes, appearance, taste and texture of the cereal was consisted of individual pieces that were similar to tiny animal crackers.
The commercials for the cereal featured a puppet named “Crispy” with antennae son the head and a fuzzy yellow body. Behind the scene it was “Jimmy Durante” voice in which it Crispy spoke and sang. This puppet act together with a child actor and was many more smaller puppets which looks like the different pieces of cereal in the commercial they use to say that it is “Indubitably delicious”.
I am not sure about the “Indubitably delicious” thing, but “Crispy” sure was the welcome change from the Great Cereal Dry Spell of 1987. It was not a good year for breakfast, with almost no new mascots for kids to bolt on to, no free toys in the box or with the box and no raspberry blue rice puffs. With the lack of antagonism and new competitor, the usual cereal champs began resting on their success.
Let me tell you something about the cereal, I should reveal that placement went the too far with this one. Obviously the commercial, was way too strange and attractive to go ignored. Children most definitely want to listen to puppets rather than humans, and this advertisement was full of puppets, not only the AD its self but even the box was an attention snatcher, they have out the pretty puppet on a shiny silver background. No one could pass that box in supermarkets without noticing it. Everyone had seen the typical suspects like the “Trix Rabbit and the Honey Nut Cheerios Bee” many times. It was special, and surely successful.
The jingle for Crispy Critters went something like this: “Hello my name is Crispy, how do you do? Crispy Critters cereal’s entirely new, its indubitably, indubitably, indubitably, indubitably delicious!!” Another went “Oh here come Crispy Critters. A good, wholesome bunch! A low sugar cereal… With lots of crrrunch! It’s indubitably, indubitably, indubitably, indubitably delicious!!”
The character Crispy was Animation by “Dean Yeagle”.
