Cyclopia: An inborn defect (birth flaw) which results in the non development of eyes and it consist of only one eye. The only single eye is located at the centre in the region usually occupied by the origin of the nose. The nose is also missing or a dismantled nose in the form of a proboscis (a tubular addition) placed above the eye.
Cyclopia and milder kinds of the identical developmental disorders are the outcome of holoprosencephaly, which is the breakdown of the embryonic forebrain to subdivide correctly. (The embryonic forebrain is in general in charge for call to mind the growth of the orbits.) Genetic material defects (such as trisomy 13) and gene mutations can disturb this progression. So also can certain toxins, some of them found in wild plants.
The term “Cyclopia” generated from the Cyclops, the one-eyed giant of Greek myths, a legendary contest of unruly huge shepherds who lived in Sicily. They had an only big circled eye in the middle of the brow. The word “Cyclops” itself drives from the Greek “kyklos” (circle) + “ops” (eye). synophthalmia is also known as Cyclopia.
Though Cyclopia is very uncommon, quite a few Cyclopic human babies are potted in medical museums (e.g. The Vrolik Museum, Amsterdam. Two children cases are also much known due to the Down disorder being born with one eye.
In cats, few severe cases are also on record, in which the mouth and nose fails to develop and resulting in suffocation right after the birth.
