One of the heart breaking news of today is that Dan O’Bannon the great creator of Science fiction and Horror Cinema died. He was 63-year-old at the time of his death. The heart aching news came in this morning. I do not have words to encapsulate fairly the impact of Dan O’Bannon on Horror and Science fiction film industry. He died in Los Angeles after a short illness according to latest reports.
Both John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon graduated from University of Southern California in same year. Dark Star is the start of his film career, Dan O’Bannon played a vital role in the making of the movie successful and served as production designer, co-writer, editor and special effects supervisor, not only that but he played the role of SGT Pinback.
His work can be observed in 1977 Star Wars, when he served as special effects supervisor. His crucial efforts set the Alien franchise on-role. Blue Thunder is also one of Dan O’Bannon efforts although he never acknowledged Blue Thunder as one of his best efforts and was not pleased with how it turned out.
Although he never get along well with the Hollywood but his ideas, vision, quality and writing skills made Hollywood to change their system. His influence on the modern day Si-Fi and horror movies can be felt clearly.
To lose such an extremely great talent like Dan O’Bannon at such a relatively young age is a tragedy.
Dan O’Bannon your legacy will live on, May your soul rest in peace.
