Debbie Schlussel’s recent comment may trigger an un-ending controversy over single mothers in military service. She has demanded the government to put a ban on the recruitment of single mothers because they are useless. She told that her employment causes harm to their children as well as to their service obligations. She explained that single mother’s costs are greater than their advantage to the military service. This argument may trigger great debate on the issue from the factions opposing the proposition on single mothers.
Woman rights organizations may blame her of nurturing discrimination against single-mothers. Thank God! The statement is not issued by a male otherwise women rights organization might have orchestrated their music on a very loud pitch. She made the statement when a single mom, and an army cook, Alexis Hutchinson was arrested when she refused to go for active service. Her officers had ordered her to admit her 10 years old son in a foster care during her active service. But the army has not admitted that they have made the statement.
The child psychologist, Dr. Karen Streeter, is of the firm view that although foster cares are equipped with good child care facilities yet the emotional and psychological dimensions of the child remain unaddressed. It is really detrimental for the child to experience long separation from her mother, the only emotional contact excluding the father. The separation may lead to traumatic effects on the child. Steerer said that the depression of the left-alone child can be dealt if the mother leaves a “trove of letters” and pictures behind her that can be opened, read and seen when they spend their time alone. She also suggested that the mother can assign an “interesting hobby” or activity which he/she can engage in during her long absence. Although the psychologist has made much valid points regarding the detrimental effects of the absence of mother on the child yet the solution she has suggested is nothing but the “mockery” of law of nature. The comment of Debbie Schlussel seems to carry enormous weight as there is no substitute for mother. Warmth of the presence of mother provides “fuel” for the any type of activity at a very tender stage of childhood.
