There are some people who do not know the definition of the word diction and for them there is nothing to be ashamed of as the word is something not so commonly used in out general every-day language. The word itself means ‘the choice of words’ that one may use to explain something whether it be a poem or a novel the diction of a person is defined as the vocabulary of the person.
I remember when I was in high school my English teacher would always use the word and it at first I didn’t know the meaning of the word – as there were others who did not either who managed to ask the teacher before I could. Our teacher explained to us the meaning of the word alongside with the meaning of the word syntax which is the sentence structuring that a person applies to their writing.
However, our teacher had the habit of yelling out ‘diction’ whenever he felt that a student was using inappropriate language in a class and the use of the word from his mouth could on imply one thing: that he was not at all pleased with the words that a certain student was using in his class. We became to get used to it and then it became something similar to any other word that one would use in a conversation though I never caught myself using the same word. For some reason it feels like a word that only old people or teachers and professors would use in their classrooms not the word that you could pop into a normal sentence with your friends or girlfriend.
