“Half time is game time” tagline at the cover of the 2002 comedy, Drumline says. The film revolves around a prodigy who has an unusual talent for drumming. Devon Miles got admission in A & T College in Atlanta as he is personally invited to join by the head of the college band. A & T band prides itself for being different from other bands as it requires the members to study music rigorously. As Devon is inducted he is interviewed and his skills are confirmed as he is placed in P1 cadre. Too much praise makes Devon proud and cocky. His behavior does not go unnoticed. Sean who is another leader at the band plans of teaching Devon a lesson. He challenges Devon to perform solo before the audience, thinking that Devon would decline. Devon not only accepts the challenge but goes on to perform solo, only to get laughed at. The incident develops a rift between the two. Devon has also attracted a girl friend to himself named Laila. As the plot progresses, it is revealed that Devon Miles and cannot read music. Consequently he is demoted to the rank of p4. Devon’s behavior gets him fired from the band. Laila is also not happy.
Little did he know that the event is going to change his life and behavior. In his anger he contacts the rival band. As the two bands are to appear side by side in a competition, Devon discovers that his heart is with A & T. He repairs his relationship with Sean and Laila also.
In the competition A & T College band adopts the ideas proposed by Devon and Sean as Devon is given permission to join the band. They go on to win the Classic competition. Drumline is very entertaining and cast includes actors Nick Cannon, Orlando Jones Candace Carey and Zoe Saldana playing the role of Laila. The DVD of drumline includes an interview with the director of the film.
