Ekistics relates to the discipline of human settlements. It comprises city and regional planning. The human settlements are understood from the standpoint of geography, demography, environment, and psychology. The discipline depends upon the scientific data with respect to nature, culture and different groups. The discipline is more abstract then urban planning and it has some ground to share with Architect engineering. Practically, the objective of the study is to identify features of human settlement which may enhance conformity of human beings with the environment.
The environment takes its roots from physical features of the area, climate and weather conditions and culture. The concepts of sociology throw light on group dynamics and the mutual interaction between the settlers. The mutual relation between different factions of human beings is understood with respect to their environment. The discipline focuses on the patterns of human settlements how they evolve in to a certain shape and what reason are behind a particular settlement formation and how they contribute to the aggregate pattern of human settlement.
Ekistics focuses on the ways how the expansion of settlements should evolve a pattern which is more economical and efficient for all. Therefore such objective can be achieved only when we follow a pre-planned pattern for the human settlement rather than allowing it to evolve blindly and randomly. According to Doxiadis, Ekistics is a science but it had been considered as a blend of art & technology only. This standpoint is considered as an erroneous one which led to heavy losses.
