
Huang Chuncai is also known to the world as “Elephant Man”, he was born in 1977 in the southern Hunan province of China. Huang Chuncai was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic disorder that causes growth on nerve tissues, the tumor first developed when Huang Chuncai was just 4-years-old by the age of 10-years he left school after being teased by his class-fellows. Huang Chuncai’s family owns a farm in China but they were unable to afford the surgeries for the removal of the tumor because the surgeries are very costly. The Southern China’s Hospital Fuda Hospital, contacted Huang Chuncai family and offered their assistance.
Huang Chuncai was first operated for the removal of tumor back in July, 2007, when 10 doctors participated in the operation they have removed 15 kg of the tumor from right side of his face. The operation has heightened the risk of excessive bleeding during each operation because the tumor contains many blood vassals.
Huang Chuncai’s backbone has been bent due to the weight of the tumor and he was barely able to speak or eat. He received his second operation on 3rd January, 2008, this time doctors removed 4.5kg chunk of flesh from the right side. A third surgery is planned for later this year to remove the tumor on the left side of his face.
Huang Chuncai known as Elephant Man suffered from extremely large tumor that has stunt his growth, leaving him with undeveloped bones. On SUN 14th June, 2009 National Geographic is going to show the story of Huang Chuncai “The Elephant Man” undergoes a risky surgery.
