The term enucleation refers to removal of the eye as a last resort when there is no possibility of sight due to irreparable damage and the presence of eye is causing pain. Eye can face different calamities like injury, tumors and glaucoma. A severe injury to eye may cause damage to eye making it enormously painful as well as irreparable. Such injuries may arise out of puncturing the eye due to a sharp needle-like object or it may be due to a bad blow to eye ball.
Inside causes include the production of tumors when generation of extra cells makes the eye painful. So in such situations enucleation of the eye is preferred. Thinking enucleation is not easy and many people don’t take it as a good solution but it is done when it becomes inevitable due to pain in the eye. People who have pets usually try to keep their pet’s eye. Now a question arises whether there is an alternate remedy for eye damage or infection. The answer is yes. But it varies from case to case depending upon the type of damage done to eye.
There are cases when the surgery may cure the damage by trimming the wounded part of the eye and then closing the wound. Similarly some damaged parts of the eye can be replaced. It is possible when eye is injured and not when there is tumor or infection. But there is an exception of some advance techniques to handle infections as well as glaucoma (internal pressure felt by the eye-ball). So enucleation should be taken as a last resort by people and should consult in detail with a certified ophthalmologist.
