We all witnessed the panic when crude oil touched $140 a barrel. With world’s fossil fuel reserves being consumed at a fast pace, any stability in fuel prices is just temporary at best. Greenhouses gases are threatening human existence on earth, making it necessary to explore alternate energy sources before it’s too late. Bio fuel is one of the promising options. Ethanol or Ethyl Alcohol is a type of bio fuel. In its pure form Ethanol is simply the beverage alcohol. However to use it as fuel it is “denatured”. Ethanol Fireplace uses this denatured ethanol for heat production. When ethanol is burned, the process is same as human breathing and Carbon Dioxide gas is produced. But by burning ethanol in fireplaces the amount of Carbon Dioxide is same as that of the quantity absorbed by the plant from which the ethanol has been made so net carbon emission into the environment is zero.
Ethanol is much more environment friendly than the fossil fuels. Moreover ethanol fireplaces are easier to carry anywhere with ethanol stored in a small tank. Ethanol is “denatured” as pure drinking alcohol is heavily taxed by the government and using it as a fuel is costly, certain substances are mixed to differentiate it from drinking alcohol.
An Australian company named “The Fire Company” is leading the pack in ethanol fireplaces with their brand “EcoSmart”. It is not very far away that we see ethanol stations around, not only to get vehicles refilled but also to get the tanks of appliances like fireplaces refilled.
