Ethiopian airlines flight 409 boarding 90 people crashed into the Mediterranean Sea minutes after taking off from Beirut airport. The flight was heading towards Addis Ababa the Ethiopian Capital. The plane is reported to have lost its contact with the control tower because of unknown reasons according to Lebanese authorities. The 82 passengers on board included 51 Lebanese, 23 Ethiopians, 2 British nationals, a Russian, an Iraqi, a Syrian, a Canadian, a Turk and a French. The wife of French Ambassador to Lebanon was also on board according to the French Embassy.
The Rescue mission looking for survivors of Ethiopian airlines crash has not met with any success. So far they have recovered 23 dead bodies.
Mr. Saad Hariri the Lebanese Prime Minister has announced one day mourning for the deceased. All Govt. departments will remain closed. The efforts of Red Cross and the security forces were appreciated by the PM.
A 14 member investigation team has been sent to Beirut to enquire into the causes of Ethiopian airlines crash. The team is comprised of members of Flight Operations, Medical unit, and staff from the Emergency Response department and Maintenance and Engineering Department.
The worse weather conditions of Lebanon that has been struck by heavy storms have lowered the chances of any survivors.
The Lebanese President Michle Sulieman ruled out terrorism as the cause of crash.
The eye witnesses at the coastal village named Na’ameh village report to have seen a ball of fire. Ethiopian airlines crash site is 3.5 km west of Na’ameh which is situated 15 km south of Beirut.
