Flight 253 was bound for Detroit from Amsterdam. It was almost 20 minutes away from its landing time at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Christmas Day. Flight 253 was carrying 278 passengers and 11 crewmembers abroad.
A Nigerian suspect tired to explode flight 253 mid air on behalf of Al-Quaida. According to reports tired to ignite some inflammable device wrapped around his leg. The attempt failed as the material did not ignite as was desired by the suspect. The suspect got third degree burn on his leg. The crew used fire extinguisher and water to put out the fire.
One of the passengers sitting three rows behind the suspect commented that he smelt smoke and saw a glow and one of the passengers dived on the suspect and then there was chaos.
Passengers on board flight 253 said that while crew was tackling the suspect he was shouting and yelling and one of the passengers said that he heard the word Afghanistan from his mouth.
The suspect on flight 253 later replied to the authorities that he had taped explosive powder to his leg and was going to mix some chemicals in it with a syringe to explode.
The suspect Abdul Mudallad is a Nigerian national of 23 years and which is found in authorities’ database as having important terrorist connections; however, man was not on the no-fly database.
Flight 253 suspect who is also known by the name Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab told the authorities that he has had links with Al-Quiada and explosive was handed over to him in Yemen. Some sources claim that he was a student from University College London.
Additional security measures were kept in place after the incident on all airports and a worldwide alert warning was issued.
