Fordyce’s spots refer to white small eruption like spots on male or female genitalia and lips. The condition is not gender or age specific. The child may have the condition at the birth but as he reaches his adolescence the condition becomes more pronounced. The doctors consider genetics and hereditary factors at play. The disease can be misdiagnosed as some sexually transmitted condition, however Fordyce’s Spots are completely harmless and there should not be any reason of concern. The condition also is not transferred from one person to the other through any vector.
The appearance of the spots has something to do with sebaceous glands. The glands are responsible for keeping the skin moist. The spots are widespread and some 80% of the population is thought to be of carrier of the disease.
Fordyce’s Glands are a reason of cosmetic concern as men and women want to get rid of them for the fear that their partner might reject him or her for having the condition. While there is no treatment necessary, the spots can treat by applying Tretinoin creams such as Retin-A (trademark). As Tretinoin is mild acid the efficacy of the treatment can be increased by co-administration of TCA creams. Tretinoin mainly works by drying the sebaceous glands and causing a mild peeling. Peeling itself is suggested sometimes but the recurrence is quite gig in case of peeling. Lasers have been tried with some success in the condition. If the laser treatment is opted the best laser to try would be Pulsed Laser.
