G20 or group of 20 is meant to be a forum to stabilize international economy and to improve the international economic and financial infrastructure. Formed in 1999 the forum brings the Finance Ministers and the Heads of the Central Banks of the member nations to a single platform. G20 credits its creation to the financial crisis of 1990 and was created to avoid such catastrophes in future. Yet it has come under some of the severest criticism, history has witnessed. Not only G20 is blamed for not stopping the course of modern economic downturn but also the whole economic philosophy upon which the G20 is based, that is “free market economy.” U.K is chairing the summit in 2009 and is sure to bear the brunt.
As the summit progressed thousands of marchers joined hands in unison against the economic base being followed and the whole point of G20 summit Pittsburgh. Police tries to dispel the crowd with tear gas shells and sound blasters. The marchers were reported as throwing stones and rubbish bins at police. The number of protesters is estimated around 2000. 20 marchers are said to be in police custody. Police is reported to be freeing up space to accommodate extra inmates in the jails.
The marchers include some of the hardest hit people by the recession. They wanted their concerns to be heard at the higher echelons of hierarchy.
Gordon Brown had warned ahead of the summit “Without concerted action there is a danger of years of low growth and low employment,”
