The General Sherman Tree according to an estimate this 2300 to 2700 years old tress is the world largest tree situated in the Sequoia National Park, California, United States. The measurement of its trunk taken in 2002 was 1487 cubic meter making it the largest non-clonal tree by volume. This tree was named after a General of American Civil War in 1979, a naturalist named this tree as General Sherman Tree.
In January 2006 one of the largest L shape branch of the tree broke off because of a winter storm, but this breakage is not supposed as indication of any abnormalities with the trees health also the loss of branch did not affect its status as the largest tree.
For a long time it was also believed that the tree has reached the age of 10,000 years but researches in years 2002 showed that the approximate age for this General Sherman Tree is somewhere between 2000 and 2500 years. General Sherman is also the biggest giant redwood and also called the largest living thing on the earth.
The General Sherman is neither the tallest nor the widest tree in the world but its title “The biggest tree in the world” is only because of the volume of wood it has in its total length and width. Well in any case it can be said that no single standing tree was found that has a larger trunk volume than General Sherman.
