Today will mark a magnificent day of American history as the twenty-second day of February is George Washington’s Birthday. George Washington who was the first ever president of the United States of America was in office for two whole terms ending on the fourth of March in the year 1797. He was succeeded by John Adams who then became the second president of America.
George Washington’s Birthday is often called Presidents Day and is a federal holiday which takes place on the third Monday of the month. The strange bit about this story is that today, which is the 22nd of this month, is also a Monday but unfortunately the fourth Monday and not the third. Every year, due to the leap years, George Washington’s Birthday falls on a different day. The part that does not make sense about this holiday is, that when it was declared as a federal holiday and then later on as a holiday for most other states as well, it was declared that the third Monday of the month would be made the holiday. Now the dates of the third Monday fall between the fifteenth and the twenty-first of the month which is quite the unsuitable name for such a holiday because it never lands on George Washington’s Birthday.
George Washington’s Birthday is a day when most of the businesses, especially those dealing with automobiles start putting up massive sales which last for just this one holiday. Though other services used to close on this day, recently a trend of continuing services has started and business continues as normal.
