Goldfield hotel was built on a real goal mine in the town of Goldfield. In its glory times and of course before being haunted, it was regarded as the best hotel in Mississippi. The hotel was built at the place of Nevada Hotel which was burnt down. Architect George E. Holesworth, used every bit of his skill to make the building a piece of art. As the gold started depleting the population started diminishing, turning the town into a ghost town. J. Franklin Douglas – original owner sold the hotel to George Wingfield . George Wingfield was a multi millionaire by any count and had interests in Politics , hotels and banking business. He rose to the leadership of both Democratic and Republican parties. The collapse of banking business set the ruin of the hotel also and George decided to put Goldfield Hotel on sale. During World War II it housed Army personnel and as Army abandoned it, the hotel was closed forever.
However the legend has altogether a different story to tell. It is said that George Wingfield housed a prostitute named Elizabeth in Room 109 of the hotel. As she became pregnant, he killed both Elizabeth and the child. It is said that Elizabeth’s spirit now roams the hotel along with the spirit of her son. There are many accounts of seeing a shadow smoking a cigar, a strange sounds coming from the rooms. So much so that the Golfield htel is regarded as one of the seven places to see the “other side” of what appears to us in this world!
