Grand Ayatollah Yousof Sanei is an Iranian scholar, well-known theologian and Islamic philosopher. Born in 1927, Grand Ayatollah Yousof Sanei rapidly rose to high ranks and in 1955 he was ranked 1st in the higher level examinations at Qom’s Hawzahs. He is a well-known senior reformist priest and a Grand Marja of Shia Islam. Grand Ayatollah Yousof Sanei is the one who issued a fatwa, declaring suicide bombing as haram “prohibited” and a “fanatic or terrorist act”.
Ayatollah Yousef Sanei said religious establishment have silently spoken opposition to the expansion of weapons of mass destruction for many years, and he explained it as the motive that Iran never strike back with chemical weapons when “Saddam Hussain” used them to kill Iranian military, he said “You cannot purposely kill innocent citizens”.
Grand Ayatollah Yousof Sanei declared that women have equal standings in Islam and women can become a judge, head of state and even a Marja.
In the 2009 Iranian election protests, rumors occurred that Grand Ayatollah Yousof Sanei had subjected a religious proclamation declaring that Mr. Ahmedinejad is not the president and that it is prohibited to assist or cooperate with his government, but was not true. Infect the rumors were spread by numerous internet news agencies, as an act to weaken the Iranian government and Mr. Ahmedinejad and to distract the devoted voters of Mr. Ahmedinejad.
Last Sunday, CNN reported that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has given his full support to the result of country’s contested presidential election.
