Hida Viloria has been writing and advocating the individuals whose gender could neither be called ‘male’ or ‘female’ i.e. intersex people.
Hida Viloria’s latest article is about Caster Semenya. Caster Semenya is a South African athlete and an intersex. Intersex people are those who could not be categorized as any of the two genders i.e. male of female. Intersex people were formally known as hermaphrodites. In a society like ours, where almost everything is gender-based, it is almost impossible to accept such a bodily feature.
In her article ‘Commentary: My life as a ‘Mighty Hermaphrodite’, Hida Viloria describes her life experiences and her difficulties which came in her life for being an intersex. In her article she writes that she came to know about her unusual condition through an article which was published in a newspaper and it was at that time when she learnt that she was going to have new issue to deal with apart from racism and homophobia. She also writes that the society should accept us as we are and that an intersex is not a new thing ‘to deal with’. Instead of making us feel inferior, the society should understand the difference and should embrace it. She hopes that one day it would happen and people will stop ruining careers of professionals like Semenya’s.
Hide Viloria is writer. She holds a degree in Gender and Sexuality from U.C. California. Her upcoming book is titled ‘The Mighty Hermaphrodite’. Hida Viloria is an advocate for the rights of intersex people.
