The celebrations of St. Patrick’s day yesterday got a lot of people curious about the history of St. Patrick’s day and why exactly it is celebrated so here is a brief story about the life of St. Patrick. A long time ago, sometime in the fifth century, there lived a boy in Italy who was not much older than fifteen years of age. This boy was abducted by slave traders who would capture youths from around the world and sell them as slaves to countries which needed them. Patrick, who was only much later anglicized to the name Patrick, was taken away to be sold as a slave in Ireland.
The history of St. Patrick’s day continues to tell us that after he was enslaved he spent a lot of time in the treacherous hands of his owners and then one day he was struck by a vision, something he saw in his dream, that there was a way that he could escape this torment and so he followed what his dreams had said and found his way to the coast of Ireland where there was a ship docked at the port, just like he had seen it in his dreams. He boarded the ship and made it to Britain and he was so relieved and grateful to god that he became a priest.
The history of St. Patrick’s day then tells us that he was ordered by the Bishop to go to Ireland again to propagate Christianity amongst the pagans and that is exactly what he did.
