Certainly the economic down turn has hit hardly all of us but one can be sure that an “American Girl” regardless of all the hardships, is enjoying all luxuries in her home at Mattels. Multimillion dollar company has just introduced a new line of dolls “A Homeless American Girl”. It sounds like a lesson out of marketing 101.Surely the folks at Mattel have devised a way to cash in on recession. While an average American is bearing the brunt of the crisis, it sure would have made the hearts softer towards a homeless doll. To me the gimmick does not sound very good, however the idea till now has received mixed reviews. Some people do like the idea as an awareness campaign, others just hate it. Some preteens have been vocal over the exploitation of their emotions by the tag Homeless.
As the recession recedes its effects and aftershocks would be felt for a long time to come and a homeless doll is sure to make it harder to let go of the bitter memories. Wondering if the Homeless Doll has a background, the folks at Mattel would have grinned and said, “I sure thought of that also!” The doll comes equipped with the background story. American Girl Gwen’s father left the family in lurk. As the recession progressed her mother had to leave her job. Eventually the family had to abandon their home and they were forced to sleep in a car.
