A man remains young while his portrait ages with time – A Classic film starring Hurd Hatfield will be aired today at midnight on TCM movie channel.
Hurd Hatfield was born to William Henry Hatfield in December 1917. His father, William Henry Hatfield, served as deputy attorney general in New York. He received his education from Columbia University before he travelled to London, England. During his stay in England, he studied drama and theater and returned to America to make his debut performance in Dragon Seed in 1944. His first film didn’t prove vital for his career. His second film, The Picture of Dorian Gray, brought him in mainstream. The film brought both fortune and stardom to Hurd Hatfield. The Picture of Dorian Gray was released in 1945. His performances as well as looks were widely acclaimed. He gained much popularity in the film circle. His other film such as The Dairy of a Chambermaid, El Cid, The Boston Stranger, and King of Kings were also successful at the box office. But Hurd Hatfield’s film career started declining very soon. His career as a film actor started losing the momentum. Hurd Hatfield made several TV appearances as well
Hurd Hatfield was fond of collecting antiques and had a great taste for art. He lived in Ballinterry House Rathcormac in Ireland and died in the same country home peacefully in 1998. He was 81. His collection was later sold in March 2007 and the house was sold at the end of year 2006.
Though Dorian Gray brought him fame, Hurd Hatfield himself regretted working in the film. He once said in an interview, ‘and I never understood why I got the part and have spent my career regretting it’.
