“What a film!” one of the greatest of Sean Penn’s achievements. I am a fan of thriller movies, the movies which have an element of mystery in their plot but as I watched the “I am Sam” I totally forgot what I like and what I don’t like. A family movie, “I am Sam” is sure to touch very core of your heart. Wondering at Sean Penn’s such a natural portrayal of a mentally deranged person; I searched the sources and learnt that Sean Penn visited a facility where mentally disturbed and psychotic patients are treated to comprehend the full requirements of the character. Dakota Fanning is absolutely lovable in her character of Sam’s daughter Lucy.
Film starts with Sam taking care of her daughter – Lucy, single-handedly. Lucy’s mother left home as soon as she was born. Taking care of a daughter as a single parent in itself is a challenge and it became tougher as the person taking care is mentally not up to the task. Sam’s intelligence quotient may be low but he is far above on emotional and social quotient. He is seen raising Lucy in impeccable manner. However there is one difficulty as Lucy is growing up she turns out to be a very intelligent and witty child. Often Sam is seen as behind her daughter when it comes to the matter pertaining to the brainy tasks. For Lucy it is not at all a matter of concern all she knows is that her father loves her, its ok with her if Sam is bit different than others.
Now Lucy is taken away by some social worker and Sam is given a death sentence in the shape of limiting his interaction with Lucy.
Michelle Pfeiffer is an attorney and takes up Sam’s case to show that he really cares for others. The case ends with Sam herself allowing his daughter to live at foster home because he knows that he has limited in mental capability.
Lucy is never able to live with her foster parents and often comes to the Sam’s house, only to be returned by Sam voluntarily. Lucy is as much loved by the foster parents as by Sam so they decide to return the child to his father.
Even remembering the film “I am Sam” makes my heart melt, highly recommended by me.
