ICR stands for the Institute of Cetacean Research; a Japan-based unique institution that conducts organic and social sciences research exclusively on whales and underwater animals. Established in October 1987, the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) is a nonprofit research organization having legal status form the Japanese government.
The aims and objectives for the establishment of ICR are to remove the increasing problems in the field of fisheries in Japan by using innovative technologies in fisheries industry, so as to have more and more products. The researches are conducted very minutely; study of whales and other aquatic mammals is carried on exclusively. By conducting researches closely on whales and mammals according to international standards, the Institute of Cetacean Research, Japan is actively contributing its share to the knowledge of whales and underwater species.
The topics on which researched are conducted in the institute include, research on sei whales, research to elucidate stock structure, surveys on Sothern Hemisphere minke whales, biological research on small cetaceans in Japanese coastal water, social and scientific studies on utilization of whales and other wildlife species.
The other activities of the institute are comprised of development of technology, new tactics to conduct research on underwater animals, study of taxonomy, ecology and biology, research on ecosystems and data analyses and material collection the field surveys.
