Is Columbus Day a federal holiday? Yes it is. Christopher Columbus was the man who discovered the new world on 12th October 1492. The day is celebrated as Discovery Day in Bahamas. The Columbus Day was first celebrated in 1792, on the occasion of 300th anniversary of the New York in the New World.
The Christopher Columbus took off in August 1942, which eventually turned into the discovery of new world. He started his voyage with only three ships and a team of 90 people.
The Columbus Day was announced as the memorial of Columbus who stepped on the soil in New York on 12th October 1942, at San Salvador Island also known as Waitling Island, which is now, belongs to British Bahamas.
In 1890s, the President Benjamin announced the Columbus Day to be celebrated for the people of United States of America. It was the 400th anniversary of new world.
The Columbus Day was got famous by the efforts of a lawyer in 1800s. He took charge to provide awareness to the people and realized the administration to name this day as a Celebration day.
The Columbus Day is being celebrated by different names, like Discovery Day in Bahamas. Columbus day in America, also with the name of Dia De La Raza, Fiesta Nacional in Spain and few others in the other areas around.
These Days were celebrated as unofficial day in the old time and in 20th century it became an official Day and was celebrated as an official Day.
