Itaipu Dam is crucial for Brazil and Parguay’s energy needs. It was little over 10:00 p.m when the dam’s energy producing units stopped working completely. Though the capital Brasilia was not affected two major cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro went into complete darkness.
Engineers quickly rebooted the energy generating plant and as of Tuesday night, the electricity was gradually restored. Authorities are confident that power would be restored completely before morning.
No reason has been made public as to why the dam suddenly went offline; however rumors are that the recent storm is to blame. In the wake of the incident country faced a shortfall of almost 20,000 Megawatts.
As the plant came online, authorities assured the residents that there is no reason to panic and everything is under control.
As the energy generated from the plant is shared between three countries in accordance with an agreement, Paraguay and Uruguay also expected power outages.
In the wake of black out in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, police force was fully alerted to deal with the danger of looting and burglaries by the gangs.
Moreover power shortage affected traffic in the worst manner. Long traffic lines could be seen on all the major roads. Trains and subways stopped at the point where they were when outage occurred.
Coincidentally just three days before the Itaipu Dam happening, a report was aired by CBS claiming that in the past power outages were the working of the hackers.
