I don’t know where you get your information from but the actor who died was not James Arness, it was his brother Peter Arness. Though I understand that him playing the role of James Phelps in the action television series called Mission Impossible might have led to the confusion about his name as the role he played went by the name of James while his real last name was Arness so when the two are combined it does sound like James Arness death.
Peter Arness, who changed his name to Peter Graves, died of a heart attack and it must not be confused with James Arness death because James Arness is still alive! Peter was the younger of the brothers and dies of a heart attack just after reaching his home in California after having been out for a brunch. His daughter was with him at the time and she tried to revive him by giving him CPR but it wasn’t something that could help him at the time.
Peter was eighty-three years of age at the time of his death and the police say that he died of natural causes, though I don’t know if the brunch helped him! James Arness death reaction will be a sad one as he lost a brother who was younger than him and a brother who went against his principles to do the movie industry some good by acting in the epically comic move “Airplane,” a movie which he was critical of for not having any depth.
