Jerry Hairston’s patient wait for 12 years finally paid him off. During the game 2 of the American League Championship, he played as a true sportsman and gave the best of him to the team making it win the match. Many sports critics compared Jerry Hairston to Louis Sojo who was part of the Yankees title team in the World Cup in 2000. Sojo made the winning score for the team and so did Jerry. Anthony Flynn of Yankees commented about Hairston and said that he could be like Sojo.
The Saturday night game, which lasted for 310 minutes due to steady, continuous rain, brought a victory moment for the Yankees against Angels. Yankees used the same old formula in the 13th inning which started after the rain stopped and the team manger sent Hairston to ‘pitch-hit’. Hairston, who is a very good pitch-hitter, did what his manger asked him and made a winning score for the Yankees. Yankees won the match with score of 4,3 against Angels.
Hairston took his pitch from the reliever Ervin Santana and made a single by hitting in the center field. The hit led the Yankees to a victorious score of 4 and they won the match in the 13th inning of Game 2 of ALCS (American League Championship Series).
“I grew up in Chicago. I always saw Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan celebrating, and the Bears. I always wanted to do that, but I never had the chance”, said Jerry Hairston who received a cream pie on his face during the victory celebrations. “…it’s a great feeling to be able to help this team. I’m just glad I was able to contribute in some way”, says Hairston.
